After a divorce, moving back in with her parents and weighing in at close to 300lbs, Laura saw an opportunity, were others may only have seen problems. She used the fact that she was now semi isolated from her friends and other activities to put her energy into eating better and losing weight.

After years of consistency and hard work, Laura lost over 120lbs and completely changed her life.

Laura was kind enough to answer the questions we needed to know and detail out her diet and workout for when she was losing the weight. Enjoy!

Laura’s Weight Loss Workout:

When I started I just walked for 30 minutes, 3x a week at 3mph. Now I do about 20 minutes of high intensity elliptical, followed by about 45 minutes of weight lifting. I do arms and glute work on MWF and legs/abs on TuThSat. I try to rest at least one day a week.

What Was Your Diet Like Originally?

Before I started losing weight? I just overate a ton. I would go out to eat all the time. My favorite foods are all the ones that are “bad” for you. Cheesy garlic bread, pizza, burritos, ice cream, cookies, etc. I also baked a lot so I would eat a ton of sweets.

What Made You Start Getting Healthy?

Boredom. I got divorced and moved back in with my parents while I looked for a new place to stay. It was far from my friends and anything fun to do so I just decided to take the opportunity to see if I could lose weight.

What Small Changes Do You Think Had The Biggest Impact?

Counting calories FOR SURE. I had no idea how much I was consuming and now I can’t even fathom eating that much. Also, taking pictures. I never thought I would be an “after” so I didn’t even start taking pictures until I had lost about 40 lbs already. I wish I had some from the very beginning.

How Did You Stay Motivated?

Honestly, seeing the changes on the scale whether good or bad kept me motivated. If the scale went down, I would keep doing whatever it was I was doing. If it went up, I was more motivated to do better the next day.

Were There Any Particular Tough Points On Your Journey?

Not one point in particular, but just trying to maintain a social life while on the journey is hard. There are tons of times where I just shut myself away because I didn’t want to mess up my progress. I am a lot better about it now that I know a date or a weekend won’t completely derail me, but I wasn’t that confident that it wouldn’t a year ago.

What Advice Would You Give Someone Looking To Lose Weight?

Start so small. Don’t try to change everything all at once. You’ll become overwhelmed. I would start by just downloading MyFitnessPal and not even changing your diet. Just track everything you eat to get an idea how much you’re consuming and slowly work down from there. If you drink 9 sodas a day, cut it down to 8, then 7, then 6, etc. This way you won’t feel like you’re completely giving everything up and it’ll be an easier transition.

What Can People Do To Set Themselves Up For Success?

I found that the fitfam community on Instagram is really helpful. There are a lot of accounts where people just try to sell you stuff and you don’t really even know if they’re trying to lose weight anymore. Don’t follow those people. Find real people who share the good and the bad, the ups and the downs, because that is realistic and it makes it easier to identify with. Someone once commented to me that it was my failures that made them think that they could also be successful and that really stuck with me. Obviously we all want to share the best parts of ourselves, but it’s the challenges that make it easy to bond with one another.

What Are Your Favourite Healthy/Weight Loss Recipes?

I don’t cook a lot to be honest. I eat food in it’s natural form or packaged things. I still get overwhelmed calculating the calories in a recipe and figuring out serving sizes. I have been eating a lot of avocados for dinner lately. I will just add some salt, pepper, garlic and lime juice and eat it like that. I’m a little weird.

How Do You Feel After Completing Such An Amazing Transformation?

I don’t feel like it’s “complete.” I’ve finally resolved that I am going to have to work at this every single day of my life because it’s still way too easy for me to slip into bad habits. It does feel nice that I can share clothes with my friends and hike a mountain and not die, however.

What Would You Do Differently (If Anything) If You Could Start Over Again?

After I lost my first 50 lbs, I went on vacation for a week and found it super hard to get back into the swing of things. I ended up taking 5 months off and regained 12 lbs. I wish I hadn’t done that, but I did end up re-losing it and then some, so it all worked out in the end.
