Eat all your favourite high carb foods (usually tipped as the reason for weight gain) while losing weight and feeling great? Sounds almost too good to be true, but vegan vlogger Hannah Howlett did just that and lost almost 60lbs, going from 188lbs to 133lbs in less than a year!
Following Dr. John McDougall’s 2012 diet, The Starch Solution, “High Carb Hannah” (as she is known on social media) ate meals packed with potatoes, rice, oatmeal and other starches while consistently dropping fat and feeling healthier along the way.
After trying some ‘classic’ weight loss methods, and some unhealthy habits such as skipping meals, Hannah decided to try a lifestyle change that involved eating a plant-based carb heavy diet and ditching all processed and artificial sugar packed foods.
Hannah was kind enough to detail out exactly how she lost the 60lbs and how you can achieve the same results. Even if you don’t want to follow this diet exactly, you can still incorporate some of the principles into your healthy eating routine!
Weight Loss Diet:
3-4 potatoes shredded into hash browns and cooked with no oil – oatmeal with berries, mango, banana and pumpkin seeds or a 4 banana smoothie bowl with coconut flakes, granola and other fruit as the topping.
Big bowl of brown rice and beans with salsa, avocado, tomatoes and a tahini dressing. 3-4 potatoes cut into fries and baked without oil. A homemade soup or chili over rice.
Cucumber, avocado or sweet potato sushi rolls. Sometimes I will make pizza and eat a whole one myself but its just a ton of veggies usually red pepper, onion, mushroom, zucchini, olives, corn etc and no cheese. Or else I will have quinoa pasta with marinara sauce and a bunch of veggies and spinach cooked in. I try to not eat gluten but sometimes on occasion would.
Weight Loss Workout:
For the first 6 months all I did was walk my dog, and I lost 40 lbs in that time very easily. After that to lose the last 20 I started cycling consistently probably 100 kilometers a week and sometimes in the hills but mostly just on the flats. I don’t have a car so I just use my body to get to wherever I have to go.

How Did You Put On The Weight?
Eating a Standard American Diet, drinking a lot, smoking, not exercising, taking adderall and starving myself
What Was Your Diet Like Originally?
I would typically fast till dinner time everyday so I would have A LOT of coffee during the day and smoke cigarettes to keep my appetite down (I thought this would make me thin) then when I got off work I would pretty much binge eat but I ate pretty “healthy” as in I would have a lot of salads, lean meats, tuna, etc I was trying to do low carb.
What Made You Start Getting Healthy?
I found Veganism back in July of 2013, watched “Earthlings” and “Forks over knives” and pretty much went vegan over night. I started my youtube channel in September and that really motivated me to keep going because I was helping so many people.
When Did You Start Seeing Results?
Once I started eating whole foods and eating intuitively it was instant, I started losing weight right away. I lost 40 lbs in the first 6 months.
Could You Tell Us About Your High Carb Diet Philosophy & How You Got Started With This?
A high carb low fat vegan diet that is mainly whole foods like potatoes, rice, beans, vegetables, greens, fruits and whole fats. I don’t eat a lot of processed foods and I LOVE eating this way because I can eat as much as I want.
This diet gives me boundless energy because believe it or not we get energy FROM CARBS! Glucose is ￼our bodies main source of fuel so when we properly fuel ourselves we can finally get off the coffee and stimulants and function properly. I have never been fitter or leaner in my life and I am so glad to not be trapped in the calorie restriction diet fad that so many people struggle with.
I know that I will never gain the weight back because this is how I will eat forever. Its not a diet, its a lifestyle and its the most rewarding way to eat because you are also saving thousands of animals lives and not contributing to the massive pollution that animal agriculture adds to the environment.
Do You Think More People Can Benefit From Upping Their Carb Intake?
I think people will be amazed if they cut out the dairy, eggs, meat and processed foods and start eating more whole plant based foods from the earth.
What Small Changes Do You Think Had The Biggest Impact?
I think really listening to my body and eating whole foods helped the most.

Its really easy when you are eating as much as you want and not depriving yourself in any way 🙂
What Advice Would You Give Someone Looking To Lose Weight?
Cut out the junk and animal products and start adding in more plant foods. Get daily exercise, get off the caffeine and stay hydrated, get at least 7 hours of sleep every night.
